Looking for a good netflix-instant find? Let me save you the requisite 20-45 minute browse and search, and recommend what I settled upon last night during a 1AM bout of insomnia. It Came From Kuchar introduced me to the perverse and prolific work of filmmakers George and Mike Kuchar. The twin brothers are wildly imaginative, eccentric, and totally hilarious. They influenced some of my favorite filmmakers including David Lynch and John Waters with their lo-budget camp and trash spectacles. (I mean literally Kuchar is all over Waters’ work, I had no idea) This is one of a string of documentaries I’ve watched lately shadowing can-do people compelled to make work on their own terms without the incentives of money or fame. These ideals are not always hard to maintain or remember in tough economic times or when one lives in LA LA Land. A google search today revealing that George Kuchar had just recently passed away left me a little sad but reminded me again as a creative person how important it is to pursue the work you care about, that it can yield amazing relationships, collaborations, and influence when you least expect it.
